Chapter Thirty-nine

Jane wasn’t sure whether to cheer or rant. Ada had arrived at dinner to say she was getting married. “Who is he?” she asked.

“He lost his wife with the last babe. He’s got the newborn and three younguns,” Ada said smugly.

“That’s a lot to take on,” Jane said carefully. She knew that so soon after her own losses that Ada would be very vulnerable, and a motherless infant would be irresistible. Four more children would give her nine to look after. That would be a tremendous amount of work.

“He’s got family,” Ada said gleefully. “His parents are still alive, and he’s got three brothers and five sisters. We wouldn’t be alone. There’s family!”

Jane could see how that meant the world to her. Ada had been isolated with her husband and children for too long. And it was the first time she saw her with a smile that wasn’t forced. Life here would be difficult, but a lot less so than she’d already had. “That sounds good,” she said warily. She looked to Willow who gave her an approving nod.

“I know you want to leave in the morning, so I’d like to invite you all to the ceremony tonight,” Ada said.

Jane was worried about how quickly it all happened until she met the man. Ada had his baby in her arms and was glowing with a happiness that Jane hadn’t seen in her. Her children were already mixed with his, giggling and whispering. And the fellow seemed a very good sort. He had his arm around Ada in a gentle way. There was a look of happy relief on his face.

Connor conducted the ceremony, and Nan put out little finger cakes. Jane knew it was probably a strain on the supplies, but Ada and her man were so thankful. It seemed like a good solution all around.

“I don’t know what to say to you all,” Ada said as she made her weepy goodbyes. “If you hadn’t come along to find us in that bad, bad time, I think we’d all be dead.” She look over to where the children were trying to steal a few more finger cakes. She lowered her voice to whisper, “I didn’t care about going myself, but they didn’t deserve such a hopeless mama.”

“We’re glad to have helped,” Willow said in her official voice. Jane wondered if she had any reservations, or if she was just glad to lose the non-paying passengers.

“I’ve let them all know about you. How you took us in and fed us without asking anything.” She beamed down at the baby. “Even my milk came back in for this little one.”

Jane figured the end of stress, and the scent of the newborn probably had combined into a powerful tonic for her body. She and her children would be safe here. Knowing she didn’t have to fear for their survival would have been a big change for Ada.

Everett came over with Annabelle and Burt each carrying an armful of the tools they had salvaged from the cabin.
